Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, recently traveled to the U.S. for a meeting at the White House, which has caused concern and disappointment in both Ukraine and Europe. The meeting, which was reportedly tense and confrontational, has raised doubts about Trump’s support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Reactions in Ukraine:

One Ukrainian lawmaker described the situation as heartbreaking. A Ukrainian military officer fighting in the Kursk region said that while the situation is not ideal, it is “Better war, than shameful peace.” Zelensky himself left the White House without holding a planned press conference.

Trump’s Position:

After the meeting, Trump posted on social media that Zelensky “is not ready for Peace” and claimed Zelensky disrespected the U.S. A planned deal to give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources in exchange for war aid was not signed.

European Support for Ukraine:

Despite the concerns raised by the meeting, many European leaders have expressed their continued support for Zelensky and Ukraine. Leaders from countries including Poland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy have voiced their solidarity with Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured Zelensky and the Ukrainian people that they are “not alone.” French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of continuing to help Ukraine and sanction Russia. Even Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is considered an ally of Trump, called for a meeting between leaders from Ukraine, Europe, and the United States to discuss the situation.

Criticism and Support in the UK:

The meeting also drew strong reactions in the United Kingdom, with many politicians expressing shock and anger at Trump’s treatment of Zelensky. Some members of parliament called for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to withdraw an invitation for Trump to visit the UK. Robert Jenrick, a senior Conservative Party leader, described the meeting as a “degrading spectacle.” Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats Party, accused Trump and Vice President JD Vance of bullying Zelensky.

Reactions within Ukraine:

Ukrainian political analyst Maria Zolkina praised Zelensky for how he handled the situation. Zelensky’s top advisor Andriy Yermak defended his approach in the meeting. However, Ukrainian opposition lawmaker Mykola Kniazhytskyi expressed concern that the meeting would only benefit the Kremlin, as the meeting was unfortunate.

Russian Reaction:

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, accused Zelensky of lying during the meeting.

The meeting between Zelensky and Trump has created uncertainty and concern about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine. While many European leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine, the lack of a clear signal of support from the United States is a cause for worry.
