The PAN 2.0 Project is a new initiative by the Indian government designed to update and improve the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system. This project aims to make obtaining and using PAN cards easier, faster, and more secure for all users. Here’s a simple breakdown of what PAN 2.0 is and why you should consider upgrading your PAN card.

The 10-digit alphanumeric Permanent Account Number (PAN) from the Income Tax Department is being upgraded with new features. This upgrade will include a QR code on all new and existing PAN cards, making it easier to verify information. Applying for a PAN will now be completely online, making it simpler for users. Additionally, all current identification numbers will be combined, so PAN will become the main identifier for businesses. To protect personal data and improve cybersecurity, a new data vault system will also be put in place.

There are about 78 crore people who currently hold a PAN card, and they can upgrade their cards. Users will keep their same PAN number, but they will need to get a new card. The government has announced that this upgrade will be free of charge for all users.

What is the PAN 2.0 Project?

The PAN 2.0 Project is an initiative by the Income Tax Department aimed at upgrading the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system. The Union Cabinet approved this project on November 25, 2024, with a budget of ₹1,435 crore. The goal of PAN 2.0 is to completely revamp the existing PAN system and improve its IT infrastructure. This upgrade will make PAN a common identifier for businesses across various digital systems used by government agencies, according to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

With this project, the PAN system will become more efficient and reliable, providing better identification and information for authorities. The upgrade is expected to enhance the overall experience for users, as PAN will now be linked with other identification numbers like Aadhaar.

They have expressed that having different identification numbers is confusing, and a single number would be more helpful. The PAN 2.0 Project plans to establish the Permanent Account Number as the primary business identifier. This means that instead of using different identification numbers, companies will use PAN as their single identification number across various digital systems used by government agencies. Under this system, all existing numbers like PAN, TAN, and TIN will be combined into one,” Vaishnaw said.

What are the Features of the PAN 2.0 Project?

In addition to adding a QR code to all new and existing PAN cards, the PAN 2.0 Project plans to create a single online portal for all PAN services. It will also introduce a mandatory PAN data vault system that requires all organizations using PAN data to store it securely. These changes are being made to improve data protection and enhance cybersecurity.

The PAN data vault system is one of the key features of the project. Many organizations, like banks and insurance companies, use PAN information. Since we provide our PAN details in many situations, these organizations will be required to store PAN data securely using this data vault system,” Vaishnaw said. A new online platform will be created because the current software is outdated, being around 15-20 years old, according to Vaishnaw. This new platform will be fully digital and paperless, making it easier for users to access services. This portal will be completely online and paperless, making it easier for users. There will also be a strong focus on improving the system for handling complaints and issues from users. The PAN 2.0 Project aims to use technology to transform taxpayer registration services, making them more accessible and efficient, as stated in an official announcement.
