US President Donald Trump has stated that Russia “should want to make a deal” with Ukraine to end the ongoing “horrible war,” emphasizing his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately. During a signing ceremony in the Oval Office, Trump expressed that every day without a meeting results in more soldiers being killed on the battlefield.

He described the conflict as one of the deadliest since World War II, highlighting the significant loss of life occurring on battlefields and farmlands. While addressing the World Economic Forum (WEF) virtually, Trump mentioned that efforts to secure a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are “hopefully underway.” He stressed the urgency of ending the conflict, noting, “Millions of soldiers are being killed. Nothing like this has been witnessed since World War II.”

Trump reiterated his desire to meet with Putin soon, stating that his motivation is not economic but rather the preservation of lives. He remarked on the tragic images he has seen from the war, calling it a “carnage” that must be stopped. When asked about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s willingness to negotiate, Trump acknowledged that both sides have suffered losses but suggested that Russia’s losses are greater.

Earlier this week, Trump indicated on Truth Social that he would impose high tariffs and further sanctions on Russia if Putin does not take steps to end the war. During his address at the WEF in Davos, Switzerland, he emphasized the importance of achieving a peace settlement.

As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fourth year, Western officials estimate that daily casualties may reach up to 1,500, bringing total casualties close to 700,000. Although Trump had previously vowed to end the war on his first day in office, he missed that deadline. He is now attempting to arrange a call with Putin to discuss a potential meeting.

While critical of Putin’s performance recently, Trump still expressed hope for negotiations and mentioned that he believes Ukraine is ready to make a deal. He also indicated that he would seek assistance from Chinese President Xi Jinping in securing peace in Ukraine.
