As the resonant chants of “Har Har Mahadev” filled the air, a sea of pilgrims from Gujarat to Karnataka made their way to the Triveni Sangam on Maha Shivratri. This marked the culmination of the 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela, a grand spectacle that occurs once every 12 years. The event began on January 13 and featured majestic processions of Naga Sadhus, along with three significant ‘Amrit Snans’.

The colossal religious gathering attracted an unprecedented number of over 64 crore pilgrims. As the last auspicious ‘snan’ of the Maha Kumbh, many devotees started gathering on the banks of the Sangam from midnight. While some camped and waited patiently to take the dip at ‘Brahma Muhurt’, many performed the bathing rituals before the appointed time.

Maha Shivratri commemorates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, which is especially significant in the context of the Kumbh Mela. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva played a crucial role in the Samudra Manthan, which led to the emergence of the Amrit Kumbh, the essence of the Kumbh Mela.

The total number of visitors exceeded the population of most countries worldwide, except for India and China. The Maha Kumbh featured six special bathing dates: Paush Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Maghi Purnima, and Maha Shivratri, including three ‘Amrit Snans’.

To manage the massive crowd, authorities enforced a “no vehicle zone” and deployed extensive security measures, including thousands of police personnel and AI-powered surveillance systems.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 concluded with a record-breaking attendance, surpassing the population of most countries. It was a testament to the enduring spiritual appeal of this ancient festival.
