On Wednesday night, April 9, 2025, India’s Home Ministry dropped an official notice naming a remarkable lawyer, Narender Mann, to handle the trial of Tahawwur Rana for the next three years. Rana, linked to the deadly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is being sent back from the US and is set to land in Delhi on Thursday morning.

A top team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and intelligence agencies successfully apprehended Rana in the United States. They’re bringing him to Delhi, where he’ll face court for his part in the Mumbai attack mess. The Home Ministry’s notice says Narender Mann will lead the case in Delhi’s NIA courts, ensuring everything’s ready to roll.

This whole thing is tied to a case called RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI—basically, the Mumbai terror plot. Back in 2009, the NIA kicked it off after learning Rana and a guy named David Coleman Headley teamed up with terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul Jihadi Islami (HUJI) from Pakistan. These groups planned attacks in Delhi and beyond, and Rana’s now in hot water for it.

Rana, a Canadian with Pakistani roots, and Headley, a US citizen, were caught plotting with these banned terror crews. India’s called them out under its anti-terror laws, and now Rana’s extradition—meaning sending him back here—is a big deal to make him answer for it.

Home Minister Amit Shah is pumped about this. During the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, he remarked, “Bringing Rana to India marks a major success for Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives. We’re all about catching anyone who messes with India’s pride or people. He’s coming to face justice—it’s a proud moment!”

Three senior officials from the NIA, along with three intelligence experts, traveled to the US on Sunday to bring Rana back into custody. They’ve got him now and are landing in Delhi on Thursday around 7 AM. The Delhi Police’s jail van squad is ready to whisk him from the airport to NIA headquarters for the next steps.
