The Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack achieved a significant milestone for healthcare in Odisha by performing an allogenic bone marrow transplant on a two-year-old child. This marks the first time such a procedure has been done on a child in the state.

The Hematology Department at SCB Medical College carried out the procedure on Wednesday. What makes this case even more special is that the donor was a four-year-old girl, creating a unique situation.

In a touching story shared by SCB MCH on X (formerly Twitter), a two-year-old girl named Aliza Naaz from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, was diagnosed with blood cancer and was receiving treatment outside Odisha. She urgently needed a bone marrow transplant to survive.

The transplant would have cost ₹40 lakh, but the Odisha Government covered the entire expense. SCB Medical College then conducted the transplant using stem cells from her older sister, Aatifa Naaz. As of the latest updates, both sisters are stable and recovering well.

This successful transplant not only represents a major medical achievement for SCB Medical College but also enhances the healthcare services available in Odisha, establishing it as a leading provider of quality health services in India.

It’s worth noting that SCB Medical College performed its first kidney transplant in 2012 and completed its first liver transplant in April 2024. In November of last year, Odisha’s Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling mentioned that SCB was preparing to start its first heart transplant, with screening processes already underway.
