The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) announced on Friday that legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been awarded an Honorary Cricket Membership, a recognition of his immense contribution to the sport.

“An icon honoured. The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) proudly announced that legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has accepted an Honorary Cricket Membership, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the sport. The announcement was shared through a post on platform X.

Established in 1838, the MCC is one of Australia’s oldest sports institutions and oversees the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), renowned as one of the world’s premier cricketing venues. This honour further solidifies Tendulkar’s legacy in cricket history.

Sachin Tendulkar holds the distinction of being the highest run-scorer at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Test cricket. In five matches at the legendary venue, Tendulkar scored 449 runs, maintaining a strong average of 44.90. His performances include a century and three half-centuries, achieved with a strike rate of 58.69, cementing his legacy as one of the finest batters to grace the MCG.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is currently the stage for the crucial fourth Test between India and Australia, with the series delicately balanced at 1-1. India triumphed in the opening Test in Perth, but Australia bounced back with a powerful performance, leveling the series with a well-earned win in Adelaide. The third Test ended in a draw, as unfavorable weather disrupted play, adding even more significance to the ongoing match.

In 2012, Sachin Tendulkar received the prestigious Order of Australia, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors. This recognition made him only the second Indian to receive the distinction, following former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee. In 2006, Soli Sorabjee was recognized as an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his remarkable efforts in fostering stronger legal relations between India and Australia.

Sachin Tendulkar wasn’t the first cricketer to receive the prestigious Order of Australia (AM). In 2009, West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara was also made an honorary member. Additionally, another West Indies icon, Clive Lloyd, was recognized as an Honorary Officer in the Order of Australia, a distinction he received back in 1985.
