PM Modi Pays Tribute to Biju Patnaik on His Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday honored the memory of former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik on his 109th birth anniversary. He praised Biju Patnaik’s efforts in shaping Odisha’s development and empowering its people.

PM Modi highlighted how Biju Patnaik firmly stood for democracy and strongly opposed the Emergency. He also acknowledged his visionary leadership and strong spirit, which continue to inspire generations.

PM Modi took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to pay tribute to Biju Patnaik on his birth anniversary. He wrote, “Remembering Biju Babu on his birth anniversary. We fondly recall his contributions to Odisha’s development and his efforts to empower people. He was deeply committed to democracy and strongly opposed the Emergency.”

Biju Patnaik’s Lasting Legacy

Biju Patnaik (1916–1997) was a freedom fighter and served twice as the Chief Minister of Odisha. He played a key role in shaping modern Odisha and was a strong advocate for grassroots democracy.

In 1991, he introduced Panchayati Raj reforms, reserving 33% of seats for women in local governance—a model later adopted nationwide through the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.

To honor his contributions, Odisha has celebrated his birth anniversary (March 5) as Panchayati Raj Divas since the 1990s.

Biju Patnaik’s Bond with Indonesia

In 1947, when the Dutch tried to regain control of Indonesia, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru entrusted Biju Patnaik with a daring mission. He flew his Dakota aircraft to Java and rescued Indonesian leaders Sjahrir and Hatta.

This brave act made him a legend in Indonesia and earned him a lifelong friendship with the country’s first president, Sukarno.

Biju Patnaik: The Visionary Behind Modern Odisha

As Chief Minister (1961-63, 1990-95), Biju Patnaik played a key role in shaping Odisha’s future. He led major infrastructure projects like Paradip Port, Bhubaneswar Airport, and Hirakud Dam, boosting the state’s development.

He also founded important institutions such as NALCO, OUAT, and Sainik School, while driving industrial growth through Kalinga Airlines, Kalinga Tubes, and Panchayat Industries. His vision and leadership continue to inspire Odisha’s progress.

Biju Patnaik: A Global Humanitarian

Biju Patnaik’s bravery went beyond India’s borders. He played a crucial role in airlifting Indian troops during the 1947 Kashmir conflict and supported Bangladesh’s liberation.

During World War II, he flew secret missions for the Allied forces and even rescued British families from Japanese-occupied Burma. His fearless actions made him a true hero beyond India.
