A body was discovered in a coal mine located in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, two days after heavy flooding trapped nine workers inside. The recovery occurred in the 3 Kilo region of Umrangso, where divers from the 21 Para unit successfully retrieved a body from the depths of the mine’s well. Rescue operations are actively continuing as teams strive to find the remaining miners who are still trapped.
Divers from the Indian Navy arrived to assist in the rescue efforts at the flooded coal mine in Assam. They first conduct the situation before attempting to enter the mine. Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has dispatched de-watering pumps to help remove water from the mine. An additional pump from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is also prepared for use, pending favorable weather conditions for deployment.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that he discussed with Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy, who confirmed that a team from Coal India will begin assisting in the rescue operations today. The situation is critical, as the water level inside the mine has surged to nearly 100 feet, making it increasingly difficult to reach the trapped workers.

The workers trapped in the coal mine have been named Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khushi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary. Chief Minister Sarma remarked that the mine seems to be operating illegally and confirmed that one person has been apprehended concerning this incident.
The police have filed an FIR under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, highlighting violations of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. Chief Minister Sarma indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the mine was operating without the necessary permits.
