Three men have been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a secluded location in Tamil Nadu while threatening her husband at knifepoint.
The incident took place on Tuesday night when a couple from Odisha had just arrived in Tiruppur, a major textile hub in South India, looking for work.
According to the police, a couple from Odisha was waiting at the railway station when three men—Mohammed Nadim (24), Mohammed Denis (25), and Mohammed Mursith (19)—approached them, offering to help them find a job.
Pretending to assist, the suspects lured the couple to a remote area, where they allegedly held the husband at knifepoint and assaulted the woman.
After the incident, the victim immediately filed a complaint at Tiruppur North Police Station. The police acted quickly, registered a case, and arrested the three accused.
Tiruppur, known for its knitwear industry, employs around 800,000 workers, with nearly 300,000 from North Indian states.
The case has sparked concerns over women’s safety in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties such as the AIADMK and BJP criticizing the DMK government for failing to maintain law and order.
In recent months, multiple sexual assault cases have been reported in the state. On December 24, 2024, a second-year engineering student from Anna University was allegedly raped by a 37-year-old vendor. In another disturbing case, a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Bargur, Krishnagiri district, accused three of her teachers of sexual assault.
TN BJP Chief Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) strongly condemned the DMK government, claiming that crimes like murder, robbery, kidnapping, and sexual violence have increased under its rule.
EPS further stated that the rise in crimes against women and children has left parents deeply worried about their children’s safety.
