Odisha to Set Up All-Women Court for Safer Justice

Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, Pravati Parida, announced that the state will soon launch a special court run entirely by women to handle cases related to crimes against women. This initiative ensures a more supportive and safe space for survivors to share their experiences.

Speaking on Sunday at the second foundation day of Odisha Women in Media (OWM) in Bhubaneswar, she emphasized that the court will help survivors of sexual assault testify without fear or embarrassment. This step is part of the government’s effort to make the justice system more sensitive and accessible for women.

Importance of a Women-Led Court

This special court will be run entirely by women, including judges, lawyers, clerks, and staff. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida highlighted that this setup will create a safe and supportive space where survivors of sexual violence can share their experiences without hesitation. The initiative aims to empower women to seek justice with confidence by ensuring a more comfortable environment.

Shakti App: Helping Survivors Share Their Stories Safely

At the event, Deputy CM Pravati Parida spoke about the Shakti App, launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, as a tool to make the legal process easier for survivors. This app lets survivors record their statements digitally, which can then be used as court evidence.

The goal is to reduce the emotional stress of repeatedly sharing their painful experiences with police, doctors, and judges. By using technology, the government hopes to offer a more sensitive and survivor-friendly approach to justice.

Making Public Spaces Safer with Media Support

Deputy CM Pravati Parida encouraged women journalists to conduct year-long safety checks of public spaces in their cities to identify risks and improve security.

She also urged Odisha Women in Media (OWM), a group of 200 women journalists, to support young women from underprivileged backgrounds who want to enter the media industry. Additionally, she emphasized the need to help current professionals enhance their skills, ensuring better opportunities for women in journalism.
