A clash between security forces and Maoist rebels has escalated in the Gandhamardhan hills of Bolangir. The firefight broke out on Friday morning in the wooded area near Hanupali village, within the Bhanupur Panchayat.
This occurred as authorities launched search operations based on reliable information about Maoists hiding in the vicinity. The confrontation involved a heavy exchange of gunfire after security forces responded to intelligence reports. Allegedly, the Maoists initiated the shooting, leading to a tense standoff.
Security forces are actively working to neutralize the insurgent threat and protect the local population. The situation remains unstable as the search operations continue, with efforts focused on apprehending the insurgents and restoring peace.

The area, noted for its strategic geography, has frequently been a center for Maoist operations, creating continuous problems for the state’s security. This operation underscores the persistent difficulties faced by security agencies in curbing the Maoist insurgency in Odisha.
Reports of casualties are pending official confirmation.
The Gandhamardhan hills in Bolangir district, the site of the recent clash, are a known hub for Maoist activity. In February 2019, security forces dismantled a Maoist camp in this area during a search operation15. The region’s challenging landscape and strategic position continue to complicate counter-insurgency efforts.
Moreover, the Odisha government has implemented preventive measures in other areas affected by Maoists. In October 2024, Bolangir police advised an Odia film crew against filming in the Maoist-ridden Khuripani and Sapamunda areas due to security concerns. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in containing the Maoist insurgency within Odisha.
