The Odisha Higher Education Department has set up four helpline numbers as part of the Odisha helpline for Nepali students to ensure their safety, security, and academic support at KIIT University after the tragic passing of Prakriti Lamsal.

To assist students affected by the incident, the government has provided dedicated helpline numbers: 0674-2396550, 0674-2323401, 0674-2323402, and 0674-2323403 for support and guidance.

Students can also contact the Higher Education Department on WhatsApp at 9124620605 to report any complaints or issues they are facing, said IAS Kali Prasanna Mahapatra, Director of the Higher Education Department.

This initiative was taken after the tragic death of a third-year Nepali student, reportedly by suicide, raising concerns about student safety and well-being at KIIT. These measures reflect the joint efforts of Odisha and Nepal to ensure the safety and support of Nepali students in India.

“The Higher Education Department has taken serious note of the unfortunate incident at KIIT, involving the tragic loss of a student and the actions taken by the institution afterward. To ensure student safety, assist those affected, support their return, and protect their academic interests, a 24/7 helpdesk has been set up,” stated a letter from the I&PR Department.

The Help Desk will have a team of nine members working 24/7 to assist students. It is now fully operational and will proactively reach out to students, helping them return to campus or address any concerns about their well-being. Students and parents are encouraged to contact the Help Desk for support in resuming their academic journey.

The incident has led to widespread protests and diplomatic discussions between Nepal and India. Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, spoke with the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, to address concerns about student safety at KIIT. The Nepali government is actively working on a diplomatic level to ensure the well-being of Nepali students studying in India.

Meanwhile, a high-level investigation into the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal has begun, led by the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Home Department to uncover the truth and ensure justice.
