Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology confirmed that the country has experienced 36 aftershocks since the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday. The aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 2.8 to 7.5 and continued through Monday morning.
According to Xinhua news agency, the massive earthquake hit Myanmar at 12:51 p.m. local time last Friday, causing widespread damage and panic. The aftershocks have added to concerns as rescue efforts continue across the affected areas.
Myanmar’s State Administration Council reported on Sunday that around 1,700 people have died, 3,400 were injured, and 300 are still missing after the devastating earthquake.
The powerful 7.7-magnitude quake hit Myanmar’s Mandalay region on Friday, followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock just minutes later. The disaster caused widespread destruction and loss of life, not only in Myanmar but also in neighboring countries. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to find survivors and provide aid to those affected.

The powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar had its epicenter just 20 km from Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, home to 1.5 million people. In response, authorities declared a state of emergency across several regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, parts of Shan State, the capital Nay Pyi Taw, and Bago.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing, with international aid teams rushing in to help those affected. Many roads connecting Mandalay and Yangon were damaged or blocked, making it difficult for emergency teams to reach some areas. Airports in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw were also temporarily shut down, leading to flight cancellations.
Social media posts showed images of collapsed buildings, damaged temples, and historical sites, including the iconic Mandalay Palace and Mahamuni Pagoda. The United States Geological Survey confirmed this was the strongest earthquake recorded worldwide this year.
The quake’s impact was felt beyond Myanmar, with tremors shaking parts of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and China’s southwest region. In Thailand, 10 people lost their lives, 42 were injured, and 78 remain missing in Bangkok. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a state of emergency in the capital, as noticeable tremors were reported in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. Some tourist sites in the Pai District of Mae Hong Son suffered damage.
India quickly responded to the crisis by sending rescue teams and humanitarian aid to support Myanmar. The aid includes assistance in evacuation efforts and relief for displaced families.
