A building that was under construction at the Kannauj railway station in Uttar Pradesh collapsed on Friday, trapping many workers beneath the rubble. The incident took place during the ongoing construction of a two-story structure as part of a beautification initiative at the station.
At the time of the collapse, approximately 35 workers were on-site. Rescue operations, involving railway officials, police, and local administration, have successfully saved 23 workers from the rubble so far.
District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukl reported that preliminary investigations indicate the collapse was caused by the failure of the roof’s shuttering. “Our primary focus is to rescue those trapped,” he stated, emphasizing that all available resources are being utilized for the rescue efforts.
The state government has declared that it will provide Rs 50,000 to anyone who was seriously injured and Rs 5,000 to those who had minor injuries. Relief operations are being conducted urgently, with the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) dispatched from Lucknow to assist in the rescue efforts.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure the safe recovery of all trapped individuals and to provide them with appropriate medical care. The situation remains critical as rescue teams continue their work to locate and assist any remaining workers who may be trapped under the debris.
