The BCCI has made big changes to IPL teams’ practice schedules. As per a report by Cricbuzz, teams can now have only seven practice sessions before the season begins. They are also allowed just two warm-up games or centre wicket practice sessions.
Additionally, the BCCI has instructed IPL venues not to host local matches, legends leagues, or celebrity tournaments before the IPL. This decision comes as stadiums experience heavy usage during domestic games leading up to the tournament.
The biggest rule changes affecting all IPL teams are about practice sessions:
Restrictions on Practice Sessions
1. Teams are allowed up to 7 practice sessions.
2. Each session can be up to 3 hours long.
3. Only 2 sessions can be used for practice matches or open net sessions.
4. Teams must get written approval from BCCI for practice matches.

Field and Pitch Maintenance
1. Teams cannot use the main pitch for practice in the 4 days before their first home match.
2. They will get a side wicket for batting, bowling drills, and training.
3. This rule ensures the pitch stays in top condition for matches.
Efficient Scheduling and Conflict Management
1. If both teams want to practice at the same time, their managers should try to work out a solution.
2. If they can’t agree, the BCCI will step in and assign separate 2-hour slots (e.g., 6 PM–8 PM and 8 PM–10 PM) to ensure both teams get fair practice time.
Safe Power-Hitting Practice
Teams will have specific areas for power-hitting practice and drills during their scheduled sessions. The BCCI has made it clear that open or semi-open nets are not allowed. Strict safety rules must be followed, ensuring only players, coaches, and net bowlers are present on the field during practice.
The IPL 2025 season is set to kick off on March 22 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The opening match will see Kolkata Knight Riders take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an exciting showdown.
