INS Tushil (F 70) is the latest addition to the Indian Navy, officially commissioned on December 9, 2024, at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. This multi-role stealth-guided missile frigate is part of the Project 1135.6 class and is the seventh ship of its kind built for India. The commissioning ceremony was attended by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who highlighted the strengthening of India-Russia defense ties and the increasing local content in Indian naval vessels.
INS Tushil is built to perform a variety of naval missions, excelling in air, surface, underwater, and electronic warfare operations. It features advanced weaponry, including BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and various electronic warfare systems. The frigate measures 125 meters in length and weighs approximately 3,900 tons, boasting enhanced stealth capabilities and a gas turbine propulsion system that allows it to reach speeds over 30 knots.

The name “Tushil,” which translates to “protector shield” in Hindi, highlights its mission of safeguarding maritime security. With this new addition, the Indian Navy aims to bolster its operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean region amid rising maritime tensions. INS Tushil represents a significant step towards India’s goal of self-reliance in defense manufacturing and showcases the collaborative efforts between Indian and Russian industries.
