In his second-ever podcast appearance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with U.S.-based AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman about India’s fight against terrorism. He emphasized that terrorism is a global issue affecting many nations, not just India. PM Modi rejected the notion that terrorism stems from ideological differences, instead attributing it to a mindset rooted in destruction and chaos. He urged the world to view terrorism as a threat to humanity, free from political or religious biases.
Reflecting on India’s long-standing battle against terror, he called for global cooperation to dismantle terrorist networks and cut off their financial support. PM Modi also urged nations that harbor or support terrorists to reconsider their actions, warning that violence only leads to devastation.
Strengthening India’s Anti-Terror Framework
Under PM Modi’s leadership, India has introduced several legal reforms to strengthen its fight against terrorism. The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was amended to allow individuals to be designated as terrorists. Security agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have been empowered, resulting in a nearly 95% conviction rate in UAPA cases.
Additionally, the government has adopted advanced technologies to address emerging threats such as cyberterrorism and terror financing. A 25-point plan was implemented to curb funding for terrorism through fake currency, narcotics trade, and illegal money transfers.
India’s Decisive Military Actions
India has demonstrated its resolve to combat terrorism through decisive military operations. Following the 2016 Uri attack, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes across the Line of Control, targeting terrorist camps. Similarly, after the 2019 Pulwama attack, the Indian Air Force carried out airstrikes in Balakot, destroying key terror infrastructure. These actions sent a clear message that India will not hesitate to defend itself against threats.
Impact and International Collaboration
India’s proactive measures have led to a significant decline in terrorist incidents—by 70% over the past decade, according to government data from November 2024. The government continues its efforts to dismantle terror support systems while ensuring seamless coordination among security agencies.
On the global stage, India has worked closely with other nations to build a united front against terrorism. By combining legal reforms, advanced technology, and military action, India has not only strengthened its internal security but also contributed significantly to global peace.
