The Indian government has announced the launch of Sahkar Taxi, a new cooperative-based ride service that will offer bike, cab, and auto rides across the country. This initiative aims to provide a fairer alternative to popular ride-hailing apps like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, ensuring that drivers earn directly without paying high commissions to large companies.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the initiative in Parliament, stating that Sahkar Taxi will register two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis nationwide.

He emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation) is more than just a slogan—the Ministry of Cooperation has worked tirelessly over the past three and a half years to bring it to life.

Govt’s ‘Sahkar Taxi’ to Launch Soon, Offering Fair Earnings for Drivers

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Sahkar Taxi service will be launched in the coming months. Unlike private ride-hailing companies, this government-backed initiative ensures that all earnings will go directly to the drivers, giving them better financial stability.

“Profits from this service won’t go to big corporations but directly to the drivers,” Shah emphasized.

Insurance Support for Drivers

To further help drivers, the government will also launch a cooperative insurance company. This will provide affordable insurance options within the cooperative system, with Shah predicting it will soon become the largest private sector insurance provider in the country.

Reliable & Affordable Transport for Passengers

The Sahkar Taxi initiative is designed to empower drivers while providing passengers with a cost-effective and dependable transport option.

A similar model, ‘Yatri Sathi, ’ is already operating successfully in West Bengal. Initially launched in Kolkata, it has since expanded to Siliguri, Asansol, and Durgapur. The service is popular for its quick bookings, local language support, affordable fares, and 24/7 customer assistance.

In 2022, Kerala introduced Kerala Savaari, India’s first government-run online taxi service. Though it faced challenges and was shut down due to low usage, the state government plans to relaunch it with revised fares and improved software.

With Sahkar Taxi, the Indian government aims to offer a fair and sustainable alternative to private ride-hailing giants like Ola, Uber, and Rapido while prioritizing driver welfare and passenger convenience.
