Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, has acquired his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in an all-stock deal valued at $33 billion. This move is part of Musk’s strategy to consolidate his tech ventures and strengthen AI development efforts, including the training of Grok, xAI’s chatbot competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT

In a post on X, Elon Musk explained that his AI company, xAI, bought his social media platform, X, in a deal that values xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion after accounting for $12 billion in debt. He said the two companies will now work together, sharing things like data, tech, and people. Musk thinks this teamwork will create big opportunities by mixing xAI’s smart AI with X’s huge number of users.

A Surprising Move

Analysts expressed surprise at the merger. Paolo Pescatore from PP Foresight described it as an unexpected development that concludes a turbulent chapter for X. Gil Luria of D.A. Davidson & Co. noted that the valuation of $45 billion for X aligns closely with Musk’s 2022 acquisition price of $44 billion.

Musk originally purchased Twitter in 2022 and rebranded it as X after making significant changes, including workforce reductions and policy shifts. These changes initially led to a loss of advertisers but have since drawn renewed investor interest due to the growing focus on AI.

An anonymous investor in xAI revealed that the deal did not require prior approval from other investors, as Musk had already been aligning the operations of xAI and X. The acquisition also coincides with Musk’s ongoing legal disputes with OpenAI, a company he co-founded but now competes against.

Musk recently launched Grok-3, xAI’s latest chatbot model, supported by its Memphis-based supercomputing cluster “Colossus,” which is considered one of the largest in the world. This merger aims to further enhance xAI’s capabilities in a competitive AI landscape.

Broader Implications

This acquisition reflects Musk’s broader strategy to integrate his companies and create synergies between AI and social media. However, questions remain about how this move will impact X users, its leadership structure, and whether regulatory challenges might arise. For now, Musk continues to push boundaries in both AI development and digital platforms.
