A high-level meeting led by the Prime Minister took place on Monday to select the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) following Rajiv Kumar’s retirement. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, participated in the meeting and requested that the appointment be postponed until the Supreme Court resolves ongoing petitions challenging the selection process. Unfortunately, his concerns were not considered in the final decision.

The selection committee, which included Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Rahul Gandhi, reviewed five shortlisted candidates. Gyanesh Kumar, the current senior-most Election Commissioner, emerged as the chosen successor. This appointment is made under a new law that changes how CECs and other election commissioners are selected.

Gandhi previously expressed distrust in the new selection process, noting that it now lacks the Chief Justice of India, which he believes undermines its integrity. The Supreme Court is set to hear related petitions on Wednesday.

The new law was established after various petitions questioned the government’s exclusive control over these appointments. This change aims to ensure a more balanced and transparent selection process for future Chief Election Commissioners.
