The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, is currently taking place in Prayagraj, India, from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This year’s event has drawn millions of devotees who come to perform sacred rituals, particularly the holy bath at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati rivers. The most significant day of this festival is Mauni Amavasya, which is expected to attract around 10 crore (100 million) pilgrims.
On January 29, 2025, a stampede-like situation occurred during the early hours ahead of the Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya. Reports indicate that approximately 30 women were injured in this incident and are currently receiving treatment at a central hospital set up within the Mela grounds. Eyewitness accounts describe chaos as large crowds gathered for the holy dip, leading to a surge that caused injuries when barriers broke.

Officials have stated that the situation was exacerbated by the sheer number of pilgrims arriving for the auspicious bath. The Uttar Pradesh government had anticipated a massive turnout and had ramped up security measures accordingly. However, despite these preparations, the unexpected crowd surge led to injuries among devotees.
In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to discuss the situation and ensure immediate support measures were in place for those affected. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also assured the state government of full support following reports of injuries and chaos at the event.
Authorities have urged pilgrims to remain calm and take baths at any available ghat instead of crowding into specific areas. Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti appealed to devotees to utilize all bathing spots along the riverbanks to alleviate congestion.
Since the commencement of the Maha Kumbh Mela on January 13, over 15 crore (150 million) pilgrims have participated in various rituals and holy dips. On January 28 alone, around 4.8 crore (48 million) devotees performed their rituals. The Mela is expected to see continued high attendance until its conclusion on February 26.
The Maha Kumbh Mela remains a significant spiritual event for millions, despite recent crowd management and safety challenges. Authorities are working diligently to ensure that future gatherings proceed smoothly while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.
