Unexpected Bihar storms have caused major destruction in just 48 hours aclaiming 19 lives and damaging crops and homes.

The sudden change in weather, with thunderstorms, hailstorms, and lightning, has affected both people and their means of living.

Where the Damage Happened

According to officials, 19 people have died in different parts of the state:

  • 5 each in Begusarai and Darbhanga
  • 3 in Madhubani
  • 2 each in Saharsa and Samastipur
  • 1 each in Lakhisarai and Gaya

Strong winds and hail have also badly damaged Rabi crops like wheat, mangoes, and litchis—especially in Darbhanga, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, and East Champaran. Many farmers are reporting huge losses just weeks before the harvest.

Government Steps In

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar offered his heartfelt condolences to the families who had lost their loved ones and said the government would give ₹4 lakh to each family as support during this difficult time. District officials have been asked to assess crop damage and provide support to affected farmers.

More Bad Weather Ahead

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the rough weather may continue until April 12. They say more thunderstorms, lightning, and even hailstorms with strong winds could hit several parts of the state.

The ongoing bad weather is being caused by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is impacting Bihar’s climate.

Areas on Alert

The IMD has issued alerts for the next few days in many districts, including:

Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Madhepura, Saharsa, Purnea, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Banka, Munger, Jamui, Sheikhpura, Begusarai, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada, Jehanabad, and Gaya.

On April 8, heavy rain and strong winds hit several places, including Patna, where evening showers cooled the heat but also brought disruptions.

Stay Safe

The Meteorological Department has advised everyone in Bihar to:

  • Stay indoors during storms
  • Avoid open fields during lightning
  • Tie down or move loose outdoor items

Authorities are closely watching the situation and working on emergency responses.
