On the 77th Army Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the Indian Army’s essential contribution to the nation’s ambition of becoming a “Viksit Bharat” by the year 2047. He recognized their commitment and bravery during his address.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister extended his warm greetings to the Indian Army, veterans, female warriors known as Veeranganas, and their families.

Every year on January 15, Army Day is observed to commemorate the founding of the Indian Army and to acknowledge India’s independence in military matters. This day marks a significant moment in 1949 when General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Army Chief of India, transferred command to Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, the first Indian Chief Commander.

This year’s theme for Army Day is “Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena,” which means “A Strong India with a Capable Army.”

In a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) statement, PM Modi expressed national pride in the Indian Army’s “unmatched courage, dedication, and sacrifice.”

He emphasized the Army’s professional excellence in tackling various challenges and maintaining high service standards.

“Our Army has a rich history of managing difficult borders, responding to disasters, and addressing internal issues. The PMO statement highlighted that the Indian Army has established a unique presence on the international stage as a well-structured and disciplined military force.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the significant advancements made by the Indian Army in recent years, especially in adapting to modern requirements.

“With changing times, the Indian Army is evolving. In the past decade, remarkable efforts have been made to strengthen military capabilities and achieve self-reliance in defense production,” stated the PMO.

“The statement emphasized that the commitment and strength of our armed forces will play a key role in creating a self-sufficient and developed India, referred to as ‘Atmanirbhar’ and ‘Viksit Bharat.’

He expressed confidence in the steadfast commitment of Indian soldiers to contribute to national progress and security.

Honoring the sacrifices made by armed forces members, PM Modi remarked, “The nation remembers with gratitude the bravery and dedication of our soldiers who serve ‘Maa Bharti’ (Mother India). On this significant occasion of Army Day, I salute our brave martyrs, Veer Naaris, and veterans on behalf of all citizens.”
