ChatGPT Down: On Tuesday, OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT experienced a major outage that affected users around the world, with India and the United States being hit the hardest. The issue started at approximately 12:30 pm IST and rapidly escalated, with thousands of users encountering difficulties accessing the chatbot.
According to Down Detector, by about 3 pm in India, there were over 800 complaints about ChatGPT not working. In both the United States and the United Kingdom, over 1,000 users each reported having trouble. In India, nearly 88% of people said ChatGPT wouldn’t respond, 8–9% had difficulties with the app, and about 3% experienced problems with the API. In the US, 93% of users struggled with the main chatbot, 7% had app problems, and 1% reported API troubles.
When people tried to use ChatGPT, they saw messages like “A network error occurred. “Verify your internet connection and attempt again,” or “Oops… an unexpected error has occurred.” Many users initially thought the problem was with their internet connection, but as more people shared their experiences on social media, it became clear that the issue was with OpenAI’s servers.

OpenAI confirmed on their status page that ChatGPT and other services like Sora, their text-to-video tool, were having problems. The company said they were investigating the issue, but did not give a specific time for when everything would be fixed. They also mentioned that users might see slower response times or more errors than usual while they worked on a solution.
On social media, many people posted screenshots of the error messages, asking if others were facing the same trouble. Some users expressed frustration, while others just wanted to know if the outage was widespread or only affecting them.
OpenAI explained that the outage was causing “degraded performance” for ChatGPT, Sora, and their API services. This meant that even if some users could still access the chatbot, it was much slower or less reliable than normal. The company said they had found the cause of the problem and were working to fix it, but there was no clear timeline for when things would return to normal.
ChatGPT has experienced outages like this before. Similar outages have happened before, but they are usually fixed within a few hours. During this incident, both free and paid users were affected, whether they were using the web version or the app.
On Tuesday, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and its related services experienced a major global disruption beginning around 12:30 pm IST. The highest number of user reports came from India, the United States, and the United Kingdom, where many faced difficulties accessing the platform. Users encountered error messages and were unable to use the chatbot as usual. OpenAI acknowledged the problem and is working on a fix, but as of now, there is no confirmed time for when all services will be back to normal.
