Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s comment on cricketer Rohit Sharma during the India-New Zealand Champions Trophy match sparked a social media uproar on Sunday. The controversy has continued, drawing criticism from both political figures and the sports community.
During the match, Shama Mohamed posted on X (formerly Twitter), calling Rohit Sharma a “fat sportsman,” which led to widespread backlash.

Shama Mohamed shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Rohit Sharma is too fat for a sportsman!” Needs to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.” The post, which has now been deleted, sparked strong reactions from fans, political figures, and the sports community.

Shama Mohamed’s remarks, widely criticized as fat-shaming one of India’s top cricketers, sparked a huge backlash. As the controversy grew, the BJP also joined in, strongly criticizing the Congress party for the “offensive” comments.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari slammed Congress for targeting one of India’s most successful cricketers and took a dig at Rahul Gandhi.
“Shame on Congress! Now they are attacking the Indian cricket captain. Does Congress want Rahul Gandhi to switch to cricket after his political struggles?” Bhandari said in response to Mohamed’s comments.
“This is an insult to every patriot who stands by Team India through all ups and downs. I challenge Congress’s criticism,” he said.

Facing mounting criticism, Shama Mohamed deleted her social media posts.
Once again, Congress finds itself caught in a national controversy. Meanwhile, SS (UBT), a key ally of the INDIA bloc, backed Rohit Sharma and wished him success in the Champions Trophy.
“I’m not a big cricket fan, but even with my limited interest, I know Rohit Sharma—whether with extra pounds or not—has taken Team India to great heights. His dedication and hard work matter the most. Win the trophy, Champion!” wrote Priyanka Chaturvedi on X.
Rohit Sharma, who became Team India’s captain in 2021, has led the team to victory in the T20 World Cup and won two Asia Cup titles. In the IPL, he has an impressive record, securing five championships with the Mumbai Indians.
