Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday requested Nepali students to return to the campus after the unrest at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar. The tension arose following the suspicious death of a Nepali girl student in the university hostel and concerns over how the situation was handled.

CM Mohan Charan Majhi spoke with Nepali counselors Sanjeeb Das Sharma and Navin Raj Adhikari, assuring them that justice would be given to the late KIIT student, Prakriti Lamsal. He also promised that peace and normalcy would return to the KIIT campus and encouraged Nepali students to come back and continue their studies.
A meeting was held at the State Guest House with officials from Nepal to discuss restoring normalcy at KIIT. Odisha Ministers Mukesh Mahaling and Suryabanshi Suraj, along with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, were present. Additionally, Nepal’s Foreign Minister spoke with Suryabanshi Suraj over the phone regarding the situation, according to a post from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on ‘X’.
KIIT University Incident: Steps Taken by the Odisha Government
- Police acted quickly, arresting the accused at Bhubaneswar airport. He was taken into custody by the Commissionerate Police and sent to judicial custody.
- KIIT University has urged Nepali students to come back to campus.
- A 24×7 control room and helpline have been set up by KIIT to assist students in returning smoothly.
- KIIT has publicly apologized for the incident, and the message has been widely shared.
- Two senior hostel officials and a senior officer from KIIT’s International Relations Office have been suspended while an inquiry is conducted.
- Two security personnel have been dismissed by KIIT authorities.
- Police have arrested five people, including two security staff and three KIIT directors.
- The victim’s family has been provided with psychological and other necessary support.
- The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Bhubaneswar has been stationed at KIIT to help restore normalcy and ensure the safe return of Nepali students to campus.
- The Sub-Collector of Bhubaneswar has been assigned to AIIMS Bhubaneswar to provide necessary support to all concerned.
- A high-level committee has been formed, led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Odisha Home Department, along with the Principal Secretary of Women & Child Development and the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department, to investigate the matter.
