Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, a 58-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and MLA for Ludhiana West, tragically died on January 11, 2025, from a gunshot wound to the head, which police suspect may have been an accidental shooting involving his licensed pistol.
The incident took place at approximately midnight at Gogi’s home located in the Ghumar Mandi area of Ludhiana. He sustained a bullet wound that pierced his temple and was immediately taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Joint Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja confirmed that the bullet was fired from Gogi’s licensed pistol. Family members indicated that it was an accidental shooting, but authorities are investigating to confirm the circumstances surrounding his death. A post-mortem examination is pending to provide further clarity on the situation.
Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister of Punjab, conveyed his profound sorrow regarding Gogi’s death. Mann describes Gurpreet Gogi as a “very kind-hearted person.” Mann posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Received the heartbreaking news… Gogi Ji was a very good person. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the family during this time of mourning.”

Aman Arora, Punjab APP President shared his condolences on social media: “My deepest condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time. May they find the strength to endure this painful loss.” Other leaders from different parties also expressed their shock and sympathized, highlighting Gogi’s contributions to local politics and community service.
Gurpreet Gogi transitioned to the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022 after departing from Congress and won the Ludhiana West seat in the state assembly elections by defeating two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Before becoming an MLA, he served multiple terms as a municipal councilor. On the day of his death, He participated in public events like a cleanliness drive for the Budha Nalla project and addressing local community issues.
Gurpreet Bassi Gogi’s untimely death has left a significant void in Punjab politics, particularly within the AAP.
