WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has been providing a payment service called WhatsApp Pay, which utilizes the Unified Payment Interface (UPI). Initially, there was a restriction on how many users could access this service. However, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has lifted this limit, allowing WhatsApp to onboard as many users as it wishes.

Previously, the NPCI had allowed WhatsApp Pay to grow its user base gradually to ensure security and performance. With this new development, WhatsApp Pay can offer its UPI services to all users in India.

The NPCI had set a cap of 100 million users for WhatsApp Pay in 2022 to monitor potential security issues. With the limit removed, WhatsApp Pay enables users to send and receive money directly within the app. Users can also request money and send payments to individuals using other UPI apps like PhonePe and Google Pay.

This change is significant for WhatsApp as it expands its financial services in India, making transactions easier for millions of users.
