The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to conclude 2024 with a significant mission that marks a crucial step toward achieving several ambitious goals, including returning a lunar sample, establishing a space station, and sending astronauts to the Moon.

On Monday, December 30, ISRO will showcase its capability to dock two satellites in space for the first time. This mission, known as SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment), is scheduled to launch at 10 PM IST from the Sriharikota spaceport using the PSLV rocket.

The SpaDeX mission involves two satellites, designated SDX01 (the Chaser) and SDX02 (the Target), which will be positioned in low Earth orbit. The fourth stage of the PSLV rocket will later serve as a platform for conducting 24 experiments, including several from startups.

This docking experiment is crucial for India’s future space endeavors, as it demonstrates the technology needed for satellite servicing and future human spaceflight missions. ISRO has confirmed that the PSLV rocket is ready for launch and has been moved to the First Launch Pad for final preparations. After liftoff, the Target satellite will separate from the rocket about 15 minutes into the flight, followed by the Chaser satellite. The two satellites will then maneuver closer together, ultimately leading to their docking—a milestone expected to occur within a few weeks after the launch.
