A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday morning, causing tremors in Kolkata and parts of West Bengal. The National Center for Seismology reported that the quake occurred at 6:10 a.m. and was centered near Puri in Odisha. The earthquake’s depth of 91 kilometers helped reduce its impact on land.

Residents in Kolkata and nearby areas experienced brief but noticeable tremors. Some reported light shaking of furniture, while others felt strong vibrations that woke them up. Despite these reports, no significant damage or injuries have been reported.

The earthquake was felt in districts like Howrah, Hooghly, and North 24 Parganas. Residents shared their experiences on social media, describing the brief but distinct tremors.

Fortunately, authorities confirmed that there is no risk of a tsunami following the earthquake. The NCS and IMD are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents to remain calm.

The Bay of Bengal region is not commonly associated with earthquakes, but its location near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it susceptible to seismic activity. This recent quake highlights the importance of earthquake preparedness, especially in densely populated cities like Kolkata.

Officials have urged the public to follow standard safety protocols during earthquakes, such as seeking cover under sturdy furniture and evacuating buildings if necessary. Emergency services are on standby, though no major incidents have been reported.
